Here we go again:
The scene tonight opens with Hurley and Charlie ransacking all the supplies from Sawyers tent area. As they do this Desmond arrives and tells Charlie he need him and Hurley in the jungle. Desmond takes them to Locke and Sayeed and Locke tells them the “island” killed Echo. As Locke is giving them some information, Desmond takes off across the jungle. Everyone pursues him. He runs into the water and saves Claire. Charlie just keeps asking “how did you know she was drowning”. To this Hurley replys “that guy sees the future dude”.
Claire approaches and they have a discussion about her swim and to thank him for saving her. Charlie looks on with jelousy.
The next scene opens with Charlie and Hurley discussing Desmond’s “power”. Charlie really wants to find out more about it. Charlies plan is to get Desmond drunk so he will talk. When Charlie offers Desmond a drink, at first refuses. He does ask what type of whisky it is. Charlie replies “60 McCutcheon”. This causes Demond to smile and start laughing histarically. He then agrees to a drink.
Its night time and they are all drunk/quite drunk.
At this point Charlie asks about how he knew Claire was drowning. He says he could hear her. But as Hurley points out, they were about a mile away. Charlie mentions the lightning incident (where Desmond predicted the exact spot that the lightning would hit).
Desmond gets up to leave. Charlie threatens Desmond and calls him a coward. Desmond takes him down and tells him he “doesn’t want to know” this sends Desmond into a flashback moment of when he turned the key.
After Desmond turns the key………………………….he wakes up.
In a pool of red paint, Penny is there aiding him. He kisses her.
Its 1:08 and Desmond is dressing in a suit. Penny helps him with the tie, he is going to meet her father. Desmond pauses something is beeping (same beeping sound as when the numbers run low in the hatch) he goes towards it, but it is only the microwave. He claims he is having Déjà vu.
Desmond goes to meet Mr. Whitmore (Penny’s Dad). At the desk, a delivery man comes out and says he has a delivery for 815. Again he remembers the numbers.
Desmond looks over and sees a painting of a polar bear on the wall in Mr. Whitmore’s office.
They discuss some things and Desmond sees a model sailboat on the desk. Mr. Whitmore comments that his foundation is sponsoring a race around the world. Desmond has a mini flashback off the boat on the island and killing the other man by accident.
Desmond asks Penny’s father for his daughters hand in marriage. To this Mr. Whitmore says he is impressed by the noble gesture. At this point Mr. Whitmore reaches for some whisky. It is a 60 year McCutcheon. Mr. Whitmore puts two classes on the table puts a little in one glass and says “this swallow is more than you could make in a month. To share it with you would be a waste and a discrace to the great man who made it, because you will never be a great man. You are not worthy of drinking my whisky, how could you ever be worthy of my daughter”.
Desmond leaves the office. He walks down the street and sees a street performer (Charlie). Desmond asks “how do I know you”, Desmond has a breef flashback and tells him he remembers him from the hatch. And he starts to sputter that he remembered this days before and that everything that was happening had happened before.
Desmond approaches his friend Oliver to ask about time travel. They both go for a beer and discuss his predicament. Desmond admits he only remembers bits and pieces. He remembers the place they are in, he attempts to predict the night, but he is wrong. Oliver then tells him to marry Penny.
Desmond goes into a ring shop. He attempts to pick out a ring. The lady behind the counter shows him a ring. He says he’ll take it. The lady tells him that he won’t…….she tells him he won’t buy the ring, he will have second thoughts and will walk out the door. She then tell him he won’t marry Penny, he will break her heart and in a few short years he will enter a sailing race to prove her father wrong and that he will reach the island to spend the next 3 years in the hatch until he is made to turn the key. If he doesn’t follow this path, everyone is dead.
He and the woman go for a walk. Desmond thinks he is dreaming. She tells him that the universe has a way of course correcting. Demond has a path to go to the island because he is supposed to. Demond claims he can choose what ever he wants. The Lady tells him he may not like his path, but pushing the button will be the only great thing he will ever do.
Desmond takes the ring anyway.
He meets with Penny, they have their picture taken. He stares at the photo and tells her he can’t do us anymore. She calls him a coward. He tells her they are not supposed to be together, as she walks off, he throws the ring in the ocean.
Later that day he is in the pub and his prediction of earlier comes true.
He gets in the way of the cricket bat and gets hit. Next thing he knows he is waking up on the island next to the imploded hatch. All that is left of his stuff is the picture of him and Penny.
The scene goes back to the present. Hurley pulls Desmond off Charlie. Charlie brings Desmond back to his tent. Desmond informs Charlie that each time he is saving Charlie’s life not Claire’s. Charlie would have gone in to save Claire and drowned, the lightning would have electrocuted him. He tells Charlie that the universe has a way of course correcting and he can’t stop it forever. He eventually says “your gonna die Charlie”.
Although that episode was a little too "Final Destination the Movie" for me, I have a feeling that it will become more clear as to its importance later on.
