This past weekend I went on an interesting adventure. An adventure that I never thought I would go on. I went to an all women's 3 day scrapbooking weekend. Now I know what your thinking and in fact I was thinking this also........."Why?" The long and the short of it is my friend needed one more person to complete their room of 4 as one of their friends bailed on them at the last minute. When I got invited our conversation was as follows:
"Would you like to come to the all women's scrapbook weekend"
"I DO NOT scrapbook"
"You don't have too, you could read or knit or go hiking or something"
"ummmmm how much is it?"
"it's $125.00......It includes everything and its on Quadra Island at Camp Homewood"
"ummmmmmmm...........................okay, I'll go, but I'm not going to scrapbook"
So on Friday afternoon I departed with my friend and 2 people I barely know.
Overall the weekend was a success. I knit two scarves and finished reading the latest Susan Juby novel ("Another Kind of Cowboy", highly recommended by the way). My friends managed finish many pages. I even won a Panago gift certificate in the door prize draw.
I have figured out why I don't scrapbook. This is because:
1. I'm not in my 30's, 40's or 50's
2. I don't have any children/grandchildren
3. I have not recently gotten married
4. This never ending craft would take over my house and then my life.
5. I'm not a person that gets joy out of flowers, hearts, circles and bubbles in various mediums.
I do now understand why certain people get into this kind of thing.
I myself used photo albums in the 90's and I also made something that is a little like a scrapbook for my portfolio, but by those ladies standards that thing would be considered an amateur piece of crap. But now in an age of technology, the whole thing seems a little archaic.
The ladies were nice people (well most of them). Thou they wanted little to do with someone who didn't buy into the whole "scrapbooking is my favourite pass time" cheerleader stuff.
I have never in my life seen so many scissors, stamps, punches, papers and albums in one place. And frankly watching all those people lift their copious containers into their cars/SUVs/Trucks on Sunday, makes me believe they could all kick my ass without trying. So on second thought, I take back the part about scrapbooking being archaic. "It's a great way to spend you time".
